ABOUT DR. KOVAC

My name is Dr. Joe Kovac, professor of cello at the University of South California. I am looking forward to meeting you all for this introduction to music course.
I graduated from Florida State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance. I went on to get my Master of Music at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of music, and finally my Doctorate degree at Yale in 2024. I have an extensive performance history, performing in Carnegie Hall and winning regional concerto competitions. I also have studied music theory for many years, with published analysis papers on Brahms and Beethoven.
When I was in high school, I didn't have enough preparation for college. I had very little knowledge of music theory, and basically no music history. I am excited to help young cellists prepare for college in a way I wish I had before graduating high school!
ABOUT THE COURSE
This course is designed for high school students at San Marino High School in Los Angeles to teach the basics of music theory and history in order to prepare cellists who might want to study music in college. I realize that not every cellist in this course will pursue a degree in music, but that is okay! This is a course that will help make you a more well-rounded person, and a focused critical thinker.
I will be covering important cello techniques, terminology, and practice methods for your success in college. There will be supplementary lessons in theory and history that coincide with the repertoire you will be studying.
As an added bonus, I'll be showing all of my students how to go about purchasing your own college-level cello, including what to look for, listen for, and suggestions on reputable luthiers to buy from.
